Wilbert Bernice Herndon was born on June 30, 1922, in Albemarle County, Virginia; he was the son of William Edward Herndon and Cora Lee (Bryant) Herndon.  W. Bernice was a resident of Scottsville, Fluvanna County, Virginia, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army.  W. Bernice passed away on March 26, 1993, in Charlottesville, Virginia, and he is buried in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, which is located 13 miles northeast of Scottsville in Fluvanna County, Virginia.
