Tate Rance Townsend was born on August 30, 1916, in Boone, Watauga County, North Carolina; he was the son of Wilson Arlando Townsend (1893-1957) and Ora Lee Hodges (1897-1963).  In April 1940, Marshall was living in Cunningham, Fluvanna County, Virginia.  On December 11, 1967, Tate married Mary Frances Wright in Reidsville, Rockingham County, North Carolina.  Tate passed away on May 7, 1987, in Pembroke, Virginia, and is buried in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, Giles County, Virginia.
