Joseph Franklin Thompson was born on May 1, 1925, in Antioch, Fluvanna County, Virginia; he was the son of William James Thompson (1868-1952) and Bessie Grace (Haislip) Thompson (1892-1962).  In 1930, Joseph was living with his parents and siblings in Cunningham, Fluvanna County, Virginia.  After his WWII Army service, Joseph married Leona Lindberg Pace on October 3, 1947, in Chesterfield, Virginia; Joseph and Leona were divorced on May 24, 1948, in Fluvanna County, Virginia.  Joseph married secondly Lucy Eleanor Yancey on December 9, 1950, in Buckingham, Virginia.  Joseph passed away on July 28, 2005, in Fluvanna County, Virginia, and he is buried at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Scottsville, Virginia.
