Comments:  Shown in the above photo (L to R) are Mary Agnes (Babe) Pitts and Josephine J. Pitts (R) as they posed for a photo in the Idylwood Photo Studio of William E. Burgess.  Mary Agnes Pitts was born on December 17, 1867, in Scottsville, and was the twelfth child of Jonathan and Mary Agnes (Snead) Pitts of Scottsville  Josephine J. Pitts was born on February 9, 1865, in Scottsville and was the tenth child of Jonathan and Mary Agnes Pitts.

Mary Agnes and Josephine never married and spent most of their adult life in their father's home, the Jonathan Pitts home on Lots 19 and 20 on East Main St. in Scottsville.  (The Pitts home, shown at right, was razed in 1955, and in 2020, the East Main St. Garage is located on the former Pitts' property.) 



In this ca. 1935 photo, Mary Agnes and Josephine pose with two of their brothers, Luther Marion and Arthur Pitts:  (L to R) Luther Marion Pitts (1854-1945), Mary Agnes (Babe) Pitts (1867-1948), Josephine J. Pitts (1865-1950), and Arthur Pitts (1857-1940)

Mary Agnes Pitts died in Scottsville on June 26, 1948, at age 78 and is buried in the Baptist Cemetery in Scottsville.  Mary Agnes was a member of the Scottsville Baptist Church, Scottsville Daughters of the American Revolution, and Scottsville United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Josephine died on August 28, 1950, in Scottsville, VA, and is buried in the Baptist Cemetery in Scottsville.  She was the last of her Pitts generation to pass away.

The photo of Mary Agnes (Babe) and Josephine J. Pitts at the Idylwood Photo Studio of William E. Burgess is part of the David Vaughan collection at Scottsville Museum.  In 2020, David Vaughan resides in Lynchburg, Virginia.
