Raymon Thacker Raymon Thacker relates how Albemarle County was formed in 1744 with Scotts Landing as its county seat. |
"The Episcopal Church had most of the parishes all over the State of Virginia, and they were granted by the Royal Crown. The parish was split to be able to establish the County of Albemarle. The place of Scottsville, because of its location on the river and because the river was navigable up to this particular point of the river and because the location was center almost of the county being established, Scottsville was named the county seat of Albemarle County.
The County of Albemarle was so large that they decided to break it up into smaller counties because it was almost impossible for everybody to get to the county seat on court days. So they broke it into the five different counties, and Scottsville being then on the very lower end of what was to become Albemarle, it was agreed to move the county seat to the little town of Charlottesville." |
