Awards Announced for Scottsville High Graduating Class
Scottsville Sun, Thursday, June 2, 1955

Awards for outstanding achievement will be presented tonight at the Class Night exercises of the senior class at Scottsville High School.

Medals will be presented to Ruth Looper, as valedictorian, with an average of 94.44; Shelby Jean Johnson, salutatorian, with average of 90.47; David Catlett, honorable mention with an average of 90.28; honorable mention to June Wells with an average of 90.

Garnett Mayfield will receive a medal for the mathematics award; Ruth Looper for the commercial award; Shelby Jean Johnson, the home economics award; Hoyt Spradlin, Jr., the agriculture award; Ruth Looper, the English award; Barbara Kidd, librarian award; Gordon Rutland, Jr., social studies award; and Ann Dawson, the DAR award for outstanding work in American History.

Ruth Looper will receive a complimentary subscription to the Readers' Digest for one year and an engraved certificate from the editors.

Ruth Looper and Gordon Rutland, Jr., will be presented leadership awards from the Danforth Foundation, which will be a certificate of leadership and a copy of the book, "I Dare You," with the "Challenge to Dare Greatly, Live Usefully, and Share Freely" all worthwile things in life.

A certificate of merit will be awarded to Ruth Looper for her wildlife essay, from the Commissioner of Game and and Inland Fishermen.
