In March 1865, John O. Lewis and his wife, Sally Lewis, hid their family treasures at their Cliffside home.

"My great grandfather owned the land from Scottsville to Charlottesville, and he hid all of his papers and his money and his deeds—everything in the barn. And the Yankees set the barn on fire, and they nearly caught him in it. He escaped. My great grandmother took her silver and her jewelry and planted it out in the garden. They didn't find any of that, and when Sheridan and Custer were having their meal, they said they wanted the best silver and china, and that was not what was on the table..."
